That crackling sound that pops and takes you back to a place of great memories. To me is my Grandma's kitchen, small unbarnished wooden table for 4 but 8 of us pile up together to eat. Sometimes just rice, beans and egg, when things were better maybe some beef, but not a prime cut, it was a tough piece with lots of connective tissue. Man but the sound of the radio playing music, kids running around, my Aunt getting lemons or tamarindo from the backyard to make us a drink. The random pop from the firewood in my Grandma's stove. The day will go on and it will get quieter as the night started to settle in. Late at night you still could see some hot coals smoking a little bit. It was bed time but we had one of the best meals made with mastery from a 3rd grade dropout that had to start helping at that age to take care of her siblings. To understand how food is created by those that put their soul in a dish is too understand what we enjoy in life. What makes us whole. What fills our heart with Grace.
I'd travel many places in this beautiful planet, from schnitzel in Germany, to eating in Lima Peru, experimenting with soju in South Korea, to brisket after a day at the Guadalupe river in Texas, from tea at sundown in the middle east to visiting a market in Cuidad Juarez. Many places, many faces, but always connected with people through food and music.
So right now I will love to be in Grandma's kitchen listening to that beat up radio, observing how she started her morning before anyone was awake, getting that fire started, and hear the firsts pops of the wood signaling the start of a new day. To more memories and laughs around that fire.
