What if peace isn’t found in holding on tighter, but in loosening our grip?

Yoga teaches us Aparigraha, the practice of non-attachment—releasing expectations, perfectionism, and what we cannot control.

This week’s Message from the Mat explores the idea that growth begins with grounding.

Just as a tree needs strong roots to reach toward the sky, we need habits, values, and connections that keep us steady through life’s uncertainties. Before we rise, we root.

✨ Journal Prompt:
What helps you feel grounded when life feels uncertain?

Share your thoughts below, or take a few moments to reflect on them this week.

💚 This Week’s Message From the Mat is Live! 💚

In yoga philosophy, Sakshi Bhava—or “witness consciousness”—is the practice of observing our thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without immediately reacting to them.

Through movement, breath, and stillness, yoga teaches us to create space between experience and reaction. Within that space lies the power of choice.

The greatest measure of what we do isn’t what we say—it’s what our community experiences. Every yogi’s journey is unique, and we’re grateful to be part of the story. Thank you for sharing your story and for the kind words, Joa! 💚

“Christal is the best yoga teacher I have ever had, and I am a retired yoga instructor who had a yoga center in Los Angeles. To tell the truth, I had stopped my practice years ago and paid the high price of contracting severe arthritis. Every joint in my body hurts to move. But my inner self has told me that yoga is a prime element of getting my flexible body back. The anguish of being less than an able beginner has crushed my ego. But Christal has a way of directing the exercises that gives me the safe space to be right where I am with zero expectation. And she really cares about her people, so much that I just have to come back. I am being loved through my pain. I am encouraged to be always gentle with my body, to listen and respond to my own body’s needs.

The biggest challenge for myself, and I believe for many people, is emotional. Yoga eventually challenges us to release our emotional and mental tension that is behind the physical tension. An emotional release often happens days into a new yoga practice, and many people name this as an emotional breakdown and quit. But it is actually the most critical moment of breakthrough. I notice, after each emotional release, my body opens dramatically. In my tears, I heard the voice, “I am a failure.” But I know it’s not true. I am showing up. Failure is not what we are. Yoga is a way to get these tensions and pain-causing spells out of our physical, emotional, and mental bodies. Stay with it, gently!”

This week’s Message From the Mat: 💚

Sometimes the most powerful part of the practice is simply creating enough space for the nervous system to soften. Pranayama (breath) gives us the ability to achieve this. 🧘
