Incredibly proud of the work done by students of Smith College! ARISE has been collaborating with Jandon Center Smith College for 3 years now and the energy and compassion the students bring for the refugee and immigrant work is unmatched. Special thanks to Madeleine DelVicario for the space to talk about our work and the current burning issues in the world of refugee and immigrant with the students. Thanks to By Goytia our incredible intern from Smith who went above and beyond for creating a recipe booklet and fundraising for refugee every day needs. Looking forward to a continious collaboration with Smith! Purna Neupane Mukesh Chandra Baral Lila K Chamlagai

"The Trump administration moved on Friday to deny swift and full food stamp payments to millions of low-income Americans, as it asked a federal appeals court to halt a judge’s recent order that would preserve those benefits during the shutdown. The legal salvo once again plunged the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, into confusion and chaos — and raised the possibility that the poorest families may receive no aid while the fiscal stalemate in Washington remains unresolved"

The President of the United States is fighting against an order to feed his own people. Let that sink in!

I know we all are pitching in to the food pantries in our area. But the demand is just going to skyrocket. We are thinking of the families that we work directly with. Please share this with your network so the vulnerable families we work with will have food for their families this month. Thank you! Purna Neupane Richard T. The Federal government has failed to provide funds for SNAP benefits even though though two federal judges ordered the Trump administration on Friday to continue paying for food stamp. “Congress has put money in an emergency fund,” Judge Talwani said during a hearing in the case today. “It’s hard for us to understand how this isn’t an emergency, when there’s no money and a lot of people are needing their SNAP benefits.” I agree with the judge. The 5 billion remaining emergency funds could have been used to feed the children, elderly and people with disabilities, the majority of people who now qualify for SNAP.

ARISE has been serving several families who are going to be impacted by this. Our Refugee Advocates who work with families to help them navigate the complexities of services are stepping up when the the Federal government is clearly failing to meet its obligation. It's not that funds are not there, but the government doesn't want to use the fund appropriated by congress. While the legal battle may take some time, we can't let these families go hungry. To support this cause we have set a direct donation line to feed these familes-- you can choose to donate any amount below. But, please be mindful that it's $187 dollars average a person is not receiving for food assistance. We have multiple, Haitian, Congolese, Bhutanese, Afghani, Syrian, families that would need your support at this critical juncture. Please donate what you can. Thank you for your generosity!
