As we observe Juneteenth, here are five facts about this important day in American history:
1. Juneteenth is celebrated each year on June 19th and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
2. The holiday marks the day in 1865 when news of emancipation reached the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
3. Juneteenth celebrations began almost immediately, with gatherings centered on community, education, music, food, and reflection.
4. The day is also known as Freedom Day, Emancipation Day, and Juneteenth Independence Day.
5. In 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday, recognizing its significance in the nation's history and ongoing pursuit of freedom and equality.
We wish our Shoreline College community a meaningful holiday and a wonderful long weekend. We’ll see you back on Monday!

For generations, Peace Arch Park has served as a powerful symbol of connection, peace, and shared purpose across borders. In this conversation, Dr.
Luther Adams (Free Man of Color) reflects on Paul Robeson's legendary 1950s concerts; where he sang to crowds gathered on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border.
Peace, Love & Handshake
Present-day organizers Ken Winnick, Jeff Smith, Haidee Landry, and Megan Hemming, continue the grassroots gatherings at the park and that tradition of friendship and solidarity. At this panel discussion we explore the political value of Cross Border Solidarity.
