Project
As our repairs to this beautiful historic home continues so does out knowledge of this historic home & the time in which it was built.
Construction:
The house was built for Randolph James in 1927 at a cost of $27,000. James's father, George, was a principal in the local Exchange Bank and a beneficiary of the city's 1920s oil boom, which financed the home's construction.
Designers:
While the architectural firm Mann and Stern designed the exterior, the interior was handled by Bavarian-born designer Paul Heenvagen. He ordered elaborate plaster crown moldings from Chicago, selecting different designs for each room.
Historical context: The oil boom of the 1920s brought newfound wealth to El Dorado, enabling residents to build elaborate homes in the latest architectural styles, and the James House is a notable example of this trend.
Interior details:
English feel: Despite its Spanish Revival exterior, the home's interior has a distinctly English feel.
Plasterwork: The interior features elaborately detailed plaster moldings and ceiling medallions in many of the rooms.
