"The white man does not obey the Great Spirit; this is why the Indians never could agree with him." --Flying Hawk, OGLALA LAKOTA– The Great Spirit runs the world and the people by a set of natural laws and principles. He says we are to live our lives and make decisions that will be in harmony with these laws. He says we should be respectful to all things and to all people. He says we should pray for each other. He says we should forgive one another. It is easy to tell if a person is following the ways of the Great Spirit. You can tell by how a man walks in life. He doesn't need to say anything. If we are dishonest or deceitful, other people will know. This is true because we are all interconnected in the Unseen World. My Creator, let me obey Your ways. Let me Walk the Talk.

OLD SCHOOL, circa 1917. Note the rider’s spur flying to the right of the pommel. Saddles in Eastern Montana typically had one cinch, forward of center. There were no chutes at the Miles City (Montana) Round-Up, and the horse’s blindfold was removed to start the ride. No timers were used, and the ride ended when the rider was bucked off or the horse quit bucking. Western saddles with a horn were the norm.

Renowned rodeo lensman Ralph R. Doubleday probably took the shot, and perhaps the cameraman in view was Bill Stephenson. Doubleday and Miles City’s George Foster were partners during 1917-18 to sell Doubleday’s rodeo images on real photo postcards. Doubleday sold an estimated 30 million postcards over 40 years. If we could but read it, all human beings carry the marks of their character in the lines of their faces. The very expressions are etched there by habitual thought. The most beautiful features may be blank of expression, lacking depth of thought or understanding, while the plainest face may be lighted with a radiance only sincerity and inner beauty can produce. Alexander Smith was a Scottish poet who wrote, "On your features the fine chisels of thought and emotion are eternally at work." No pretense can hide the thoughts and feelings. The narrowed eyes of suspicion and discontent tattle, while serenity and devotion to others can reveal such beauty of spirit that the shape of the face is forgotten. "In thy face I see the map of honor, truth, and loyalty," wrote Shakespeare, and it is safe to say that being able to see those things in another's face is an assurance that he also had such a face. To see only avarice and selfishness in every expression turned to us is to know that our own expressions lack something to be desired. Life does not have to be full of ease to reflect beauty. Some of the most beautiful faces in history have not had eyes to see nor voice to move their lips, but have possessed peace and serenity that only faith could render.

"The Three Spirits of the Storm"

In a time when the world was young and wild, storms were more than weather — they were alive, guardians of nature's balance. Among them roamed three sacred horses, each marked by powerful colors and ancient symbols. They were called The Spirits of the Storm.

The first was Korran, the Black Horse of Fury. His mane cracked like lightning, his hooves summoned thunder. Korran carried the spirit of raw power, reminding the world that destruction, though feared, clears the way for new beginnings.

The second was Veya, the White Horse of Clarity. She moved like the winds after the rain, graceful and pure. Veya whispered to the rivers and forests, teaching that peace follows every tempest, and stillness is just as mighty as rage.

The third was Rhaelo, the Painted Horse of Balance. Marked with swirling patterns of red and black, Rhaelo held the sacred duty of weaving Korran and Veya’s opposing forces together. He was neither chaos nor calm, but the bridge between — the symbol that harmony comes only when opposites respect each other.

When storms raged across mountains and darkened the skies, the people would pray to the Three Spirits. It is said that if they rode in unity, the storm would pass gently, feeding the earth without tearing it apart.

One night, a young shaman asked the spirits in his dream,
"Which of you is the greatest?"

The horses answered together in a voice of wind and rain:
"None alone. Fury teaches respect. Peace offers healing. Balance carries both. Together, we are whole."

To this day, when thunder rolls and lightning dances above, the wise know the Three Spirits are riding once more —
"Not to bring fear, but to remind the world that strength, peace, and balance must always run together."
