Tour Stop #2 - Linden Spring
4995 Engle-Molers Road
Shepherdstown
When you walk through the deep doorway of Linden Spring, the large stone fireplace, blackened by two centuries of use, that anchors the end of the house, is one of the first things to catch your eye. Deep windowsills, venerable ceiling beams, period hardware and four working fireplaces add to the authenticity of this 18th century home. But in fact, much of what you see is only half a century old.
Linden Spring was built in 1779 by Robert Lucas and his son on a large parcel of land granted by Lord Fairfax. Almost 2 centuries later, the house was almost completely gutted by fire. The house stood derelict for 20 years until purchased by Bob & Martha Putz, who began a total renovation in 1970. Robert Putz resolved to return the house to its original condition and spent many hours studying all aspects of 18th century houses, including building techniques, woodwork details, cabinetry, and more.
