1. What did Paul want the Thessalonians to pray about? (1-2)

2. Why is Paul so hard on people who don’t work?

3. Why is having a good work ethic so important?

4. What can people turn into who don't work? (10-11)

5. How does Galatians 6:9 compare to verse 13?

📖 “Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. As for you, brothers, do not grow weary in doing good. If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. Do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother. Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times in every way. The Lord be with you all. I, Paul, write this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.”

Paul concludes his message to the church in Thessalonica by praying a blessing of peace over their lives. Even during seasons of extreme suffering and persecution, those who have put their faith in Christ can experience an unshakeable peace. The constant presence of Christ in our lives helps us to walk forward with calm because we are confident that He is sovereign over our circumstances.

God’s peace is available to you at all times and in every way. Christ Himself is your peace, and His presence is always with you. His grace will guide you step by step and fill you with peace whenever you face problems.

Lord, fill me with Your peace today. Help me focus on Your presence, not my problems. Amen.

Paul has experienced disappointment in people during times of affliction, and here in these few verses he helps the believers in Thessalonica understand how they can combat discouragement when friends fall away from the faith. First, Paul advises them to pray for God’s protection and provision so that the message of the Gospel will continue to spread despite the enemy’s schemes. Second, Paul encourages them to stop focusing on faithless men and to fix their eyes on the faithfulness of God. Finally, Paul challenges them to remain steadfast in obedience to Christ and continue to love and serve one another.

Friends, God will never fail you. Your Protector is fighting for you today. If you are experiencing spiritual warfare, cry out to your Savior. Your Warrior will help you to stay standing. His steadfast love will see you through this hard season.

Faithful God, thank You for fighting for me. Help me to walk forward confidently today trusting You are more powerful than my troubling circumstances. May I rest in the reality that the enemy is a defeated foe, and Your kingdom purposes will continue to advance. Your plans for me cannot be thwarted. You are a Mighty God who is always at work making miracles happen. Amen.

📖 “But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command.
