Today is Holy Saturday. When Jesus had been crucified, Saturday was a dark day for his followers. They had no idea that he was going to be resurrected, so it was a day of unspeakable grief. Today we have the knowledge that Jesus is risen. That means that even in our darkest moments, we can be the light.

I think I speak for the whole of Kansas City when I say my heart is heavy. Yesterday was supposed to be a day of celebration and fun, but it turned into tragedy and darkness.

To the 20+ who are wounded, my prayers are for you all to make a full recovery. To the family of Lisa Lopez, words cannot describe the pain you're going through. All of us in KC are grieving with you today.

To the KCPD, KCFD, and all of the local police, fire, and medical professionals who helped at the parade. To the FBI and Homeland Security agents who showed up. Thank you for your service. Thank you for your swift life-saving action. It was because of you that the casualties were not as bad as they could've been. It is because of you that a stampede was prevented.

This is not the Kansas City that I've grown to know and love. Anyone who has previously visited here can attest to the fact that KC is one of the classiest cities in the US. I pray that together we can all heal from this with the same sense of unity we had during the parade. Where all of KC was united regardless of race, religion or identity.
