When Should I Paint What?
In Sequim and Port Angeles, it's pretty obvious when to paint your exterior. We can generally paint outside from the beginning of May to the end of October. If we get lucky, maybe you get a few weeks on either end.
What about interior? A lot of people like to paint their interior during the summer months because it's less inconvenient during good weather.
Counter to that, there's actually a very good reason to paint your interior from November to April. The main reason is, this is the slow paint seasons in our area.
Most painters bid things out at a lower rate during those months. If you wait to paint your interior in that time frame, you will safely save $5 or $10 per labor hour. When you consider that labor is usually your largest expense, that can add up to $500, $1,000 or even more depending on the size of the project.
So if you're trying to manage your budget in the face of large home painting projects, paint your interior in the winter and save some money.
You got to love it!!!

Why Paint Your Interior?
For a portion of you, this might seem like an obvious question, but some of the answers might not be what first comes to mind.
Let's start with the obvious. Paint protects all the surfaces of your home. If drywall doesn't get paint, eventually it's gonna fall apart with the wear and tear of people moving around a house. All those little bumps and bruises in the wall will be a lot worse without paint.
Paint is the best way to give your interior a new look. Whether you're redoing all the furnishings in your interior and want it all to be completely new or you just want to freshen up the look, painting is by far the easiest and best way to do that.
The last, but certainly not the least important reason to paint your interior, is that it is literally the backdrop of your life. Most people don't really think about how the look of your interior affects them, mentally and psychologically, on a day to day basis.
If it is warm and inviting or bright and cheerful, those things are going be part of your everyday experience. If it's dark, dreary, or dirty, that's also going be a part of your day. We support you in having a great life. Let us create a feel in your home that lifts you up and gives you access to more.
What to do with popcorn ceilings
Popcorn ceilings were very popular from the 1950’s to the 1980’s. As a result, there are still many homes with popcorn ceilings. The problem arises when you are trying to come up with a way to remove this fad from days gone by. This is the rub.
You can scrape it off and sand it. Then you will probably have to patch it in places, sand it and spray primer and paint. However, there is a weakness to this strategy. Asbestos was used a lot in the making of popcorn ceilings. If that is the case, then you are in for hiring an abatement crew to come in and remove the asbestos which is a four to five figure expense (It could be over 20k for a larger project) and you still have the priming and painting to pay for.
The less expensive option is to leave the popcorn up and prime and paint it. This seals it in as long as you are not disturbing the surface.
If someone smoked a lot in the rooms and the ceilings are brownish, you will have to prime it with a couple of coats of shellac (the best option) to seal in the cigarette smoke. Shellac is an alcohol based product. This is not a fun process because alcohol is a finer product that can permeate your respirator better than oil or latex.
You will need to take breaks to go outside and breath for a few minutes. If the smoking wasn’t too bad, you should be able to get by with a heavy duty primer like Extreme Block Primer by Sherwin Williams instead of using Shellac. This is much easier to use.
Not a fun project by any means.
