I can't believe it was more than 20 years ago that I moderated my first local candidate forum!

Last Tuesday, I had the privilege of stepping back up to the podium at the Port Ludlow Beach Club as moderator for the League of Women Voters' Jefferson County primary election forum for the candidates for County Commissioner.

The League chair introduced me by mentioning I got into this role as a result of reporting for the Leader newspaper and gaining a reputation for "even-handedness"—and that through the pandemic I helped lead many of the League's "Zoom forums." Although they take more time out of my busy schedule, I really do prefer the in-person forums. They energize me.

What energized me most, though, was looking around the room on Tuesday.

The candidates brought thoughtful ideas, respect for one another, and a genuine commitment to public service. Two of them are younger than I am (!), and I left feeling optimistic about the next generation of local leadership.

In a time when national politics often dominates the conversation, I'm reminded that local government is where decisions touch our everyday lives most directly. These races matter. The people who serve on county commissions shape our communities in tangible ways.

Volunteering as a moderator is one small way I can help create a space where voters hear directly from candidates and make informed decisions. I'm thankful to the League of Women Voters for the opportunity to lead in this way, and to everyone who participated in making the forum possible.

If you're eligible to vote in the August 4 primary, I hope you'll take the time to learn about your local candidates and cast your ballot.

Because local politics is where it's at.

In the dark about divorce, and what to expect?

When a client uttered these words on a coaching call last week, she spoke the truth.

Ouch.
