92-year-old Joy Lofthouse is to be recognised next month by Women of the Year for her service as a Spitfire pilot in the Second World War.
In 1943, Joy saw an advert calling for women willing to learn to fly as there was a shortage of qualified pilots. Joy applied and became one of only 164 female pilots, known as the ‘Attagirls,’ who flew a variety of aircrafts including Spitfires and Hurricanes.
Earlier this year in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, Joy had the chance to fly a spitfire again – an experience she described as incredible!
Joy will be attending the Women of the Year Lunch and awards, which bring together more than 400 extraordinary women in mid-October.
Joy commented, “I am delighted and very much looking forward to it.”
Congratulations Joy!
