Meet the first artist behind one of the new murals coming to 13th & Fir, Derek Wu!

Derek Wu is a Seattle-based muralist whose roots trace back to street art. From these beginnings, he has developed a distinctive style that resonates with both the broader public and street culture communities. His work has taken him across the globe, from Amsterdam to Taipei and throughout all corners of the United States. Through surreal, narrative provoking imagery, Wu’s murals aim to reflect and engage the identities of the local communities that experience them.
Here’s a statement directly from the artist:
“As a former resident of the Central District, I’m honored to contribute, once again, to the CD’s cultural fabric. The first mural I ever painted still stands on Jackson Street at the Pratt Fine Arts Center, marking the beginning of my journey. I carry deep gratitude and respect for the community that supported me and shaped my path as a full-time muralist.”

The mural design was informed by inspiration sessions with the 13th & Fir community completed last year. Since then, Derek has been hard at work refining the design to reflect the community’s values and identity. We can’t wait to show you the finished mural this summer!

In 1975, SCIDpda was founded to preserve and develop the Chinatown–International District during a time of rapid growth in the city. Fifty years later, that mission continues — stewarding affordable housing and commercial buildings, supporting small businesses and improving public spaces, and developing new projects that serve families, seniors, and multigenerational households.

This year, we had the opportunity to celebrate it all. After three neighborhood tours and two special gatherings, we wrapped up our 50th Anniversary campaign with our Gala at Victory Hall — honoring the projects, people, and community that made the last 50 years possible.
