Digestive System: Complete Process Explained

The digestive system is a group of organs that work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and remove waste from the body. It plays an essential role in providing energy, supporting growth, and maintaining overall health.

Digestion begins in the mouth, where teeth chew food into small pieces and saliva starts breaking down carbohydrates. The food then moves through the esophagus by muscular movements called peristalsis.

In the stomach, food mixes with gastric juices containing acid and enzymes that break down proteins and kill harmful bacteria. The partially digested food becomes a semi-liquid substance called chyme.

The chyme enters the small intestine, where most digestion and nutrient absorption take place. Bile from the liver helps digest fats, and enzymes from the pancreas break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through villi.

Undigested food then moves into the large intestine, where water and minerals are absorbed. Helpful bacteria produce certain vitamins, and the remaining waste becomes solid.

Finally, waste is stored in the re**um and expelled through the a**s.

The digestive system is vital for energy production, nutrient absorption, immunity support, and overall body function.
