Smart engineering pays for itself!

Foil skegs are not only functional; they also feature efficient hydrodynamic designs. These skegs can provide efficiency gains of 20-30% on their own, and when combined with an optimized hull form, the savings compound.

At Hockema Group, we engineer for performance that pays for itself.

The F/V SOTAVENTO was built to perform!

Every aspect of the SOTAVENTO was engineered to enable Pesquera Costa Rica S.A. de C.V. to fish more intelligently, safely, and efficiently off the coast of Baja California.

Here's what's under the hull
-CFD-Optimized Hull: Computational fluid dynamics analysis shaped every curve to reduce drag and fuel burn.
-Bulbous Bow: The hydrodynamic design of the bulbous bow decreases wave-making resistance, meaning less fuel is burned.
-Bow & Stern Thrusters: Precise control in tight harbors and at the fishing grounds, enhancing safety and maneuverability.
-6 RSW Fish Holds | 6,345 cu ft for keeping the catch fresh.
-10,781 gal Fuel Capacity supports extended trips.

Connecting Communities!
The M/V Lituya runs daily between Ketchikan and Metlakatla, an essential route for residents who have no other access to the city.

Hockema Group was part of the team that brought this project to life, offering structural design and plan review for this Alaska Marine Highway System ferry.

Good engineering goes beyond technical skills; it’s personal.

From passenger ferries to fish boats, barges to government vessels, Hockema Group delivers solutions across the entire industry.

When Dunlap Towing Company needed a ship-assist tug built for the unforgiving waters of Alaska, they called Hockema Group.

The result: the M/V James Dunlap, a 101' × 36' Azimuth Stern Drive tug, built by Hansen Boat Co. Powered by twin EMD 16-645 E2 diesels driving Ulstein Z-drives for 4,300 HP of bollard pull, she was engineered from the keel up for year-round ship-assist operations in one of North America's most demanding ports.

Thirty years later, that design legacy continues. When Dunlap needed a successor vessel, the Gretchen Dunlap, they returned to Hockema Group.

That's what a long-term client relationship looks like in naval architecture: not just one great vessel, but a fleet built on trust and proven performance.

The HG9142 Trawler design optimizes capacity while keeping a registered length of under 79 feet. It prioritizes crew safety on deck during heavy weather by providing comprehensive protection and comfortable accommodations.

The design features twin screw propulsion with under 804 HP (600 kW) to comply with regulations, avoiding Tier 4 engines. A single screw design can provide between 1,000 and 1,800 HP with Tier 4 engines.

The HG9142 design incorporates Nautican propulsion, featuring high-efficiency nozzles and triple rudders to ensure optimal maneuverability.

Whether you're planning a new build, repowering an existing vessel, or exploring fleet optimization, we specialize in creating vessels that work as hard as the people who run them. Contact Hockema Group for your next vessel project. Learn more at https://hockema.com/projects/
