Bringing this back. Congrats !! Let’s do this!

Although the vote is not final, I think we can confidently say that Katie Wilson will be our next Mayor. Huge congrats to Katie Wilson for Seattle Mayor, the campaign and all her supporters!

10 months ago, no one could have predicted this, when it appeared that Bruce Harrell would cruise to an easy reelection. It took enormous guts, vision and boldness to jump into the race and build the coalition needed to win.

I supported Katie for a number of reasons, which I’ll likely share in the coming days. But one thing I want to emphasize tonight is her character.

I mentioned this back in July, and think it’s worth repeating now.

What I appreciate most about Katie is her authenticity - how genuine, caring, thoughtful and trustworthy she is. Character matters tremendously in our elected leaders. This will be a very difficult role, but I am confident that Katie's core values and character will serve her and our City well.

Congrats again to everyone who volunteered, talked to friends/neighbors, donated vouchers, canvassed farmer’s markets and grocery stores and so much more. You made the difference and your energy, voice and ideas will be needed just as much in the coming months and years as they were in the campaign.

And, of course, check that your ballot was counted and thanks to all those volunteers chasing and helping to cure ballots!!!

While ballots are still being counted, we are so proud of the nearly 70% of the vote we received. Thank you for your support!

Whether you contributed vouchers, knocked doors, made a donation, or spread the word to your friends and neighbors — this win is our win and shows what is possible when we come together as a community.

These election results provide a strong mandate for bold leadership on housing affordability, taxing the ultra-wealthy, supporting our children and families, and insisting that South Seattle have a strong voice on City Council.

But I will continue to need your help. I’m asking you to bring the passion that drove you to support our campaign into City Hall.

Thank you to the other candidates in this race for running positive, issue-focused campaigns: Adonis Ducksworth, Jamie Fackler, and Jeanie Chunn. I hope to continue working with you to make progress on our shared priorities in South Seattle.

Let’s celebrate all the work we’ve put in over the last nine months to bring a strong voice for the South End to City Hall.

Our public schools are the heart of our community and should be funded and supported so that every child can thrive and educators can afford to live in the community where they work. Many of the problems facing our schools, whether it is lack of funding, homelessness, housing costs, gun violence, segregation, economic inequality, systemic racism, or mental health, are outside the control of educators and Seattle Public Schools and require collaboration with the City and other levels of government.

I have been a passionate supporter of unions and public education for decades. Early in my career, I worked as a secretary at a law firm representing labor unions, inspiring me to go to law school. While in school, I interned at the Washington Education Association.

My wife Jennifer is a lifelong public-school educator and union leader. I have been going to Olympia with her, SEA, and other parents for nearly a decade to advocate for progressive revenues and increased school funding.

I am grateful for the support of Seattle EPEC and many current and former school board members. When elected, I look forward to doing everything I can to support Seattle Public Schools and our students, families, and educators.

District 2 has the highest rate of gun violence out of anywhere in Seattle.

When elected, I will continue engaging with affected community members, nonprofit community violence intervention groups, the Seattle Police Department, housing providers, and Seattle Public Schools to track gun violence, determine proactive community responses, and take the comprehensive approach this public health risk requires.

We know the work of trusted community organizations and intervention experts like Community Passageways and Choose 180 is effective. We need to invest sustainably in this work and increase collaboration with government agencies, no longer working on an ad hoc, reactive basis.
