Sewing things is fun, especially when I’m learning a new kind And it’s a traditional Japanese stitch! 🪡

Today is the 80th anniversary of FDR signing EO9066 that forcibly removed and incarcerated hundreds of thousands of Japanese and Japanese Americans on the west coast, including my maternal grandparents. Families and businesses had days to try to sell their belongings, houses, and storefronts or entrust them to friends (many of whom never returned the property to their original owner). Due to this fired removal, a thriving Nihonmachi (Japantown) in Seattle went from over 40 blocks to now about 2. Families were separated, loved ones, culture, and language lost.

I lost my grandfather before I was born, and my grandmother when I was 4 so I don’t have many pictures with her. One thing she was known for was her skill and passion for creating: sewing, knitting, crochet, bunka shishu, cooking and more! It’s with her in mind that I cherish handmade creations and continue to create 🥰
