Note that at certain stages of learning a skill, you may very well find that an internal focus of attention is more useful than an external focus. However, especially when a skill is well-learned, research over the last couple decades in all sorts of areas, from sports to music, have found that focusing more on your end-goal (sound, phrasing, etc.), and less on the physical mechanics of how to produce that desired goal leads to more accurate and effective performance. So it’s certainly worth experimenting with, if this feels new to you!

This is actually something we’ll spend a week exploring more deeply in the upcoming live Performance Psych Essentials class, with various types of focus strategies that can not only help with playing more effectively, but help with getting into “the zone” more consistently as well.
