Saw this at a Seattle gas station today.
Six dollars and nineteen cents. For regular.
Nobody headlines it as "Middle class gives up summer vacations." But that's what's happening — 60% of Americans have already cut restaurants, concerts, and travel because of the pump.
The Strait of Hormuz is 7,000 miles away. The impact lands in your driveway.
If you're wondering why Washington is so much higher than the national average of $4.26 a gallon, here's why:
State gas tax (55¢) — Washington's fuel tax is one of the highest in the country. The state has no income tax, so fuel and other consumption taxes carry more weight in funding roads and public services.
Climate Commitment Act (50¢) — Washington's cap-and-invest carbon program requires refineries to buy carbon credits for their emissions. They pass that cost directly to consumers. Before this law, WA and OR gas prices were nearly identical. Now WA runs ~45¢ higher than Oregon for this reason alone.
Summer blend (20¢) — Environmental regulations require a lower-volatility summer blend that's more expensive to refine. West Coast refineries switch over in spring, cutting output during the transition and driving prices up seasonally.
West Coast supply isolation (15–25¢) — The West Coast is largely cut off from the national pipeline grid. Washington gets most of its crude from Alaska and imports, making it more exposed to global supply shocks — like the Strait of Hormuz disruption — than landlocked states that tap Gulf Coast pipelines.
Could it be time to ease the taxes while we figure this out?
