Shelley, a quiet force of generosity and resilience. She didn’t just run a bar; she built a refuge, a gathering place where Seattle’s LGBTQ+ community could celebrate, mourn, create, dance, and organize. I’ll never forget when I first started community organizing—a friend and community organizer had passed away suddenly, and we needed to raise funds quickly to support her family. I showed up at The Rose on short notice and without hesitation, Shelley and Martha opened their doors. They didn’t just offer the space; they quietly donated themselves, never seeking recognition, just acting with the deep kindness that defines them.

That was Shelley—she never needed to be the center of attention, but her impact was undeniable. The Wildrose stands as a testament to her legacy, a space that has nurtured activism, connection, and love for generations. Seattle is forever better because of her. She would 100% roll her eyes at me saying that but it’s true. My heart goes out to my family.
