The Living Tree Operational Model OM
06/24/2026
A small town in Canada has officially recognised trees as living beings with rights of their own.
Terrasse-Vaudreuil, near Montreal, unanimously adopted a resolution declaring that trees have the right to life, natural growth, integrity, and regeneration.
Mayor Michel Bourdeau called trees “our biggest ally” in the fight against climate change, highlighting their role in cooling cities, improving air quality, managing water, and protecting biodiversity.
The town will now review local bylaws to ensure trees are protected or replaced when removed.
Supporters argue that if corporations can have legal rights despite not being alive, living beings like trees should be able to receive legal protections too.
The move follows a growing global trend of granting rights to nature, including rivers and ecosystems, recognising that human wellbeing depends on the health of the natural world.
