You can’t teach a child to swim when they’re drowning. My First Lobby Day in Olympia. I spent the day pitching senators and representatives, including leaders from District 43, to support investing in positive, preventative programs that strengthen whole child well-being and community health. Right now, too many of our kids are in crisis mode. We are spending enormous time and resources on assessments and downstream intervention. Those matter. But without bold investment in prevention at the community level, we are measuring the problem more than we are solving it. Both sides of the aisle understand this. Prevention is the long game. Through our work at Impactful Fund, providing film and science-based mental health education to K–12 schools, families, and educators, I see what happens when we equip communities early. We can stop the hemorrhaging before it becomes a crisis. I come to this work as a filmmaker, a mother of six, and someone who spent most of her life not understanding mental health at all. What I know now is game changing. Prevention lowers absenteeism, increases graduation rates, reduces justice system involvement, ER visits, hospitalization, and homelessness. A few pennies invested early can save millions later. More importantly, it saves lives. Community is the elixir. Belonging is the buffer. This work compounds.
