We get this question at least 10 times a week: "Should I order topsoil or compost?"

Here's the short answer:

If you're filling, leveling, or building a planting area from scratch, you need topsoil. Our Two-Way Topsoil (sand + compost) gives you structure and drainage right out of the gate. Want to go one step further? Our Vegetable Garden Mix adds loam to that blend — sand, compost, and loam together — so your beds are ready to plant without any extra work.

If you already have decent soil and just want to feed it, that's where straight compost shines. Our Organic Compost top-dresses an existing lawn beautifully, works into tired beds, and breaks down to improve what's already there. Our Oly Mountain Fish Compost is another strong option — fish-based, fast-acting, and a favorite for vegetable gardens.

The mistake we see most often: someone orders straight compost to fill a 12-inch raised bed from scratch. Compost alone compacts over time, drains poorly in depth, and roots struggle. It feeds soil. It doesn't replace it.

Not sure how much you need? Use our yardage calculator at dirtexchange.us — and order exactly what your project calls for, down to 1/2 yard.

Tag your favorite gardener — they'll want to know this.
