Aloft is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month as we feature Aloftean stories and families from across the country.
Today we feature Edys Fernandez. Edys immigrated to the United States with his family from Cuba as a refugee in 1980. He shared the impact of his culture and how it has shaped his perspective on life: "I grew up in Miami which has become one of the largest Hispanic multicultural cities in the United States. I was exposed to a melting pot of Caribbean, Central, and South American cultures and traditions. From the music to the food, to even the Spanish language (every country has its slang and way of speaking that is unique). It was fun listening and learning more about my Hispanic heritage on the streets of Little Havana, Miami. I loved watching the elders play dominoes. The impact my culture has made on my life is the lesson that FAMILY AND COMMUNITY are everything."

Today we feature Pablo Soto and family, who immigrated from Chile. Pablo recently discovered through a DNA test that he is also 30% Mapuche Indian and 8% Aymara Indian. He entered the United States at 6 years old with his parents to Miami, FL When describing how being Latino has impacted his life, Pablo shared "the current immigration crisis puts my heritage front and center everyday. Though (me and my family) entered legally I cannot help but think how hard it must for those who make the choice to leave home to find greener pastures.". He also feels for the descendants of his ancestors who continue to fight just to exist on their lands (Mapuche Indians of South America).
When describing his favorite aspects of Chilean culture, he highlights the celebrations of Chilean Independence Day (September 18): "You get empanadas, Chilean beef corn pie, humitas (Chilean tamales) and parties in big open areas called fondas that sell traditional food."
