You’ve probably seen big numbers shared online about “bycatch” in Alaska’s trawl fisheries.

But those numbers leave out one important thing: what’s actually being caught.

In the Eastern Bering Sea - where 90 percent of U.S. po***ck comes from - the fishery harvests an average of 2.76 billion pounds of Alaska po***ck each year.

Everything else combined?
64 million pounds – that's 2.3% of total catch.

Within that 2.3% is not one specific species - it’s broken into very different categories, each managed separately by NOAA Fisheries.

Over the next few posts, we’ll break down exactly what’s in those numbers - and what’s not.
