544 - Walking Behind Waterfalls: The Science of Silver Falls

Have you ever wondered why some waterfalls allow you to walk behind them?

Join us at South Falls in Silver Falls State Park, Oregon, where we explore the fascinating geology that created one of the most famous waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest. A long, long time ago, layers of volcanic basalt formed this landscape. Over time, water eroded the softer rock beneath the harder lava layers, carving out the huge cavern-like overhang that visitors can walk through today.

In this science snippet, you’ll discover:
• How waterfalls form
• The role of erosion in shaping the landscape
• How ancient lava flows created Silver Falls

Nature isn’t just beautiful—it’s constantly changing the Earth beneath our feet.

Wow! Science is so amazing.

543 - How a River of Lava Became a Cave

Explore the incredible lava tubes of Lava Beds National Monument in Northern California. These underground tunnels were formed when rivers of molten lava flowed beneath a hardened crust. When the eruption ended and the lava drained away, hollow caves were left behind.

Join me as we venture into these volcanic caves and discover:
- How lava tubes form
- The different textures created as lava cools
- The cave’s twilight and dark zones
- Gold Dome Cave and its fascinating golden bacterial coating
- The volcanic forces that shaped this unique landscape

These caves are part of Medicine Lake Volcano, the largest volcano by volume in the United States and one of California’s most fascinating geological wonders.

Whether you love geology, caves, volcanoes, or simply exploring God’s amazing creation, you’re going to enjoy this underground adventure!

Wow! Science is so amazing.

541 - How Water Carved Multnomah Falls - The Science of Erosion

Welcome to beautiful Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge of Oregon!

In this science snippet, we explore the incredible geology behind one of the most famous waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest. Learn how lava flows, floods, erosion, and moving water helped shape Multnomah Falls into the towering waterfall we see today.

Did you know:
• The cliffs are made of volcanic basalt
• Ice wedging breaks of chunks of rock
• The waterfall is still changing the landscape through erosion today

Science is happening all around us in nature!
