Today, on the front lawn of Harding University during her 100th birthday celebration, I had the honor of reconnecting with one of my greatest math heroes, Steven Smith. What a legend. He taught me almost everything I know about mathematics during my undergraduate years, from Calculus 2 to Linear Algebra.
But it wasn’t just how he taught math that made him special—it was how he embodied what it means to be a true Christian. I wasn't a Christian when I began my studies at Harding University, but despite his shining examples and others around campus, I discovered what it means to live for Christ.
He was always there, not just to guide me through complex equations, but to listen with an open heart to whatever life challenges I was facing. Because of his unwavering support and the example he set, I found the inspiration to pursue my path in mathematics and teaching. I am so grateful for his impact on my life, and I strive every day to be the kind of educator he was to me.
