Stay Classy Marines!
Trent Williams, a 12‑year‑old from York, South Carolina, once used his Make‑A‑Wish opportunity for something far from typical. Born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, he asked to train with the Marines at Parris Island — and the Corps made it happen.
During his visit, Trent arrived on the yellow footprints and was greeted by drill instructors just like any new recruit. He crawled through dirt and smoke on the Day Movement Course, moved through tunnels and under barbed wire, and carried a replica M4 as he pushed through each obstacle. Marines treated him as one of their own, shouting encouragement as he powered forward.
His biggest moment came at the 48‑foot rappelling tower. With his parents watching nervously from the ground, Trent leaned back into the rope and made the descent after a few tense minutes of coaching. When he reached the bottom, he admitted it had scared him, but the support around him made him feel unstoppable.
Despite the limits of his heart condition, Trent always showed determination. He couldn’t play contact sports, but he stayed involved in football by helping his father, a coach, study plays and stand on the sidelines. His parents often said that for a boy born with half a heart, he had the biggest one they’d ever known.
His wish to train with the Marines wasn’t typical, but it fit him perfectly and the Marines at Parris Island gave him a day he never forgot.
