These are Cashew Apples. The curled, dark thing at the bottom is the (very delicious) cashew nut! But here’s where it gets more confusing: the red “fruit” isn’t technically a fruit, but a hypocarp—the real fruit is the hard nut with shell. The “fruit” (ok...hypocarp) is edible and sweet. Stranger still, this plant is related to poison ivy and the shell of the nut is a skin allergen! Plants are amazing!
