Happy birthday to Mary Cassatt (1844โ1926)! ๐ Born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, Cassatt spent most of her life in Paris, where she exhibited with the Impressionists. She is perhaps best known for her depictions of women and children going about their daily lives, such as "Young Girl Reading" (1894). Here, Cassattโs focus is on the readerโs concentration, as seen in how she has built up the tones of the subject's face and hands. By approaching her images concretely and sympathetically, Cassatt declared that women should be portrayed as individuals and challenged stereotypical presentations of women in art of the late 19th century.
๐ Read into it: Encounter Mary Cassatt's "Young Girl Reading (Jeune fille lisant)" (1894) in "Revolutions," only at the Hirshhorn.
