Medicare prescription drug plans are going to work a bit differently in 2025. Since the coverage gap (also known as the donut hole) is officially GONE, prescription plans will now only have 3 phases of coverage instead of 4. We'll take you through each phase this week.
Today, we're starting with the first phase of coverage: The Deductible Phase.
Everyone starts here. During this phase, you'll be working to meet your deductible. The standard Part D deductible in 2025 is $590. Your plan could have a lower deductible, but no plan will be higher than $590.
The deductible may not apply to all your prescriptions. Drug formularies are arranged in tiers. Drugs in the lower tiers (common, generic medications) often don't require a deductible. Drugs in higher tiers (specialized, name-brand medications) usually do.
If any of your prescriptions fall into higher tiers, you'll need to meet your deductible before the plan begins to pay for a portion of your medications.
