The Things You Got Wrong Might Be What God Uses Next

In our foolishness, we look to something other than God to meet the needs of our life.

We could all tell stories, and some of them were really dark, terrible things we turned to. Booze, drugs, s*x, money, or just a person.

But honestly, we can make an idol out of anything, even good things. Food. Work. People make their spouse or their kids an idol, looking to them for joy, resource, and sustenance.

But God is the One who completes us. He's the One who supplies everything, and He knows everything we need.

People can even take religion and turn it into an idol. Not relationship with God, which we're meant to pursue, but church or some religious pursuit twisted into the thing itself.

We see it in our culture too. Driving through our neighborhoods, we pass statues and things some have turned into idolatry, chasing other things even as they think they're pursuing God.

So when the angel tells Gideon to tear down the idol, He gives a stunning instruction in Judges 6:26: "build an altar to the Lord your God, sacrifice the bull as a burnt offering, using as fuel the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down."

The very thing built to worship a false god, God says to tear down and use as fuel for true worship. So might the very things we got wrong in our stories be what God uses to bring Him glory?
