🤝 On March 19th, the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce hosted a milestone event within its Workforce Development Program, bringing together regional educational institutions and about 20 high-tech and advanced manufacturing companies.
This gathering aimed to enhance Education-Industry alignment and cooperation. The Chamber's 2024 initiative is dedicated to boosting the number of internships in these sectors, utilizing the resources of regional Education Partners to match students with tailored internships 🔄 and offer intern stipends.
The strategy goes beyond increasing internships; it also aims to improve upskilling routes for industry newcomers through educational courses, aligning K-16 Career Technical Education (CTE) with industry demands.
The ultimate goal is to forge a Local Talent Pipeline, creating a bridge between education and industry, addressing the challenge that many local high-tech and advanced manufacturing firms face in recruiting local talent for entry to mid-level positions.
The solution proposed by this Program is to uncover and connect the local, yet untapped talent pool to the tech and manufacturing sectors, offering visibility to opportunities through grassroots connections with educational bodies. Internships are envisioned as a prime gateway for those new to the tech and manufacturing fields.
Key collaborators include SBCC MESA, Santa Barbara Partners in Education, Allan Hancock College, Goodwill Industries International Youth Programs, the Santa Barbara County Education Office, and several UCSB student outreach initiatives.
The March 19th meetup revealed the industry's astonishment at the extensive supportive services education partners can offer for internships, prompting a commitment to start or expand their internship offerings.
This effort is supported by a grant from the Santa Barbara County Workforce Development Board, marking a significant move towards bridging education and industry for growth and development.
