You've been told new opera is inaccessible. Cerebral. Hard to connect to.
Then there's this: the opening of Elmer Gantry by Robert Aldridge. This is gospel music. This is Americana. These are church hymns and folk melodies you already know in your bones.
This isn't opera that asks you to work for it. This is opera that sounds like home.
Robert Aldridge's score won two Grammys, and when you listen to this overture (performed by Brevard Music Center last summer), you'll understand why. It doesn't sound foreign or abstract. It sounds like the music that raised you.
