"Now we're gonna prove that practice makes perfect". 40 years ago this weekend on March 20, 1986 was one of the great moments in 80's Dead history- the return of Box of Rain for the first time since 7/28/1973. Check out this video from the show, teed up for the set-closing breakout, you can hear and feel the exhilaration from the crowd, it's full on chicken skin as listen back and relive the thrill of hearing my all-time favorite Dead song during my first run to Hampton Coliseum, freshman year of college. This particular Hampton run included the debut of Dylan's masterpiece 'Visions of Johanna', the Grateful Dead debut of Road Runner, and a Sugar Mags that found Bobby climbing up on a speaker in full showman mode (video link below)! Never missed a Hampton show after that in the 80's, culminating in the unreal 'Formerly the Warlocks' run in October '89 (that's a story for another day!)

A few months back, October 11, 2025, Heads All Happy Hour and the SB Deadhead community rolled into beautiful Chase Palm Park down by the beach for the 5th Annual 'Jerry Day Santa Barbara' featuring a host of SB-based bands & musicans devoted to the music of Jerry Garcia & the Grateful Dead, and an absolutely surreal encounter with Jerry's legendary Fender Strat 'Alligator'! It was an epic day in so many ways, one we will never forget! Together we raised a nice chunk of change to support the great work of Grateful Guitars Foundation and JAMS Music School. We danced, laughed and tore it up with 8 hours of live Dead & Jerry music (along with a few fun curveballs) and said 'Thank You Jerry' the best way we know how! It was Alligator's first performance in Santa Barbara since the Grateful Dead's 5/20/73 show at UCSB, which was billed as 'A Day In The Sun'. In homage, we presented 'Another Day In The Sun' and leaned into the '71-'73 GD era (including Europe '72) when Alligator was Jerry's main electric guitar, and, being in the park after all, even paid a very special nod to legendary S.N.A.C.K. benefit show 3/23/75 at Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate park with full set tributes to the Dead's early Blues For Allah set and the legendary Bob Dylan / Neil Young / The Band set from that day. The bands and musicians spanned generations and beautifully, with all of you, showed the strength of our local Deadhead music scene! It was a special time for our talented guitarists to feel the power and emotion of playing Alligator, and we are forever grateful for the experience! Another Day In The Sun ☀️
Here's the first video from this special day, with No Simple Highway performing 'Here Comes Sunshine' with special guest Karina Dawn Line. It was on the heels of a terrific Ladyfinger set into a monster rolling thunder rhythm devils Drums into a show closing sunset romp from our own NSH!
Let's meet up again tomorrow night, Saturday February 28th at SOhO when NSH teams up with our friends from LA, The Alligators, for a full-on dance party throwdown that spans the eras of the Grateful Dead! See you there! ⚡️
