š§ Why Safety Programs Donāt FailāPeople Do š
By : Tyler DeCapot, CSP, CMSP, CHSO
Iām probably going to ruffle a few feathers with this oneā¦
Iāve spent more than 20 years working in construction, mining, transportation, and other high-risk industries. Iāve seen companies with million-dollar safety programs still have people get hurt. Iāve also seen smaller companies with fewer resources outperform everyone else.
The difference wasnāt the paperwork.
It was the leadership.
Too many organizations think another policy, another inspection, or another mandatory training session is going to fix their safety culture. It wonāt.
People donāt go home safe because someone added another binder to the shelf.
They go home safe because they trust their supervisor.
Because they know they can speak up without getting shut down.
Because leaders are visible, involved, and actually care about their peopleānot just the numbers.
Compliance is important. Itās the foundation.
But compliance alone has never inspired anyone to make the right decision when nobody is watching.
The best leaders Iāve worked with werenāt the ones who quoted OSHA standards from memory. They were the ones walking the jobsite, listening to their crews, removing obstacles, coaching instead of criticizing, and earning respect every single day.
Trust builds accountability.
Accountability builds culture.
Culture prevents incidents.
Technology will keep changing. Regulations will continue to evolve. But one thing will never change:
People will always be the biggest factor in workplace safety.
If you want to improve your safety performance, donāt just invest in another program.
Invest in your leaders.
Thatās where real change starts.

š§ā”Data centers and the Construction challenges.
Everybody wants to talk about the emissions and power usage from data centers⦠but nobody wants to talk about the MASSIVE opportunities theyāre bringing to Utah.
Right now, data centers are creating some of the biggest construction and infrastructure projects in the western United States.
That means:
š· Thousands of construction jobs
š° High-paying careers
š§ Opportunities for skilled trades
šļø Growth for contractors and local businesses
ā” Major infrastructure expansion
𦺠Huge demand for safety professionals
š Long-term economic growth for Utah
Like it or not, the modern world runs on data infrastructure.
AI, hospitals, emergency services, banking, communication, cloud systems ā all of it depends on facilities like these.
Do the environmental conversations matter? Absolutely.
Should sustainability and smarter energy solutions be part of the future? 100%.
But letās not ignore the reality that these projects are feeding families, creating careers, and transforming Utah into a major technology and construction powerhouse.
The goal shouldnāt be stopping progress.
The goal should be to build smarter, safer, and more responsible while continuing to move forward.
Utah is changing fast⦠and data centers are a huge part of that future. ā”šļø

Springvilleāthis oneās gonna be packed.
Engines revving. Bikes flying. Food trucks rolling.
And yeah⦠first 200 people get a free hot dog.
June 13th. Pull up, bring your crew, and donāt show up late.
PPE conversations matter more than people think.
Not every guy without gloves or glasses is being careless. Sometimes the gear is uncomfortable, damaged, doesnāt fit right, or they simply donāt understand the risk anymore because ānothing has happened yet.ā
Thatās why talking to your crews matters.
Not just enforcing PPE ā explaining the why behind it.
Some of the best safety culture is built in simple jobsite conversations, not safety manuals.
Protect your people. Teach your people. Talk to your people.

A lot of companies talk about people being ātheir greatest asset,ā but you can usually tell the truth by how they treat workers when production gets tight.
If people are only viewed as a dollar amount, eventually safety becomes just another box to check.
But good safety culture is different.
Itās knowing your crew has value far beyond whatās on a paycheck:
* Experience
* Work ethic
* Knowledge
* Looking out for one another
* Catching problems before they become incidents
That stuff doesnāt show up on a spreadsheet, but itās what keeps jobs moving and people going home safe.
A workerās worth isnāt just measured by labor rates or production numbers. Sometimes the most valuable person on site is the one willing to slow things down and speak up before something goes wrong.
Thatās real culture.
