My first interaction with Carl Johansen was 10 years ago at the intersection of Tupper Road and Route 6A. He came to vet me as a first-time selectman candidate and, at the end of our conversation, placed my campaign sign on the back of his truck. Carl was honest, a man of integrity, and selfless in his advocacy for various issues around town. He believed in the purpose and meaning of service and kept a watchful eye to ensure that personal benefit was never the result of local policy. We were not always on the same side of the table when debating local issues, but we always stood by each other, respectfully discussing our positions and collaborating on the path forward. Carl was a true friend who led by example. Imagine what our world might look like today with more of Carl’s influence? I will miss our many telephone chats, visits, and Carl’s valuable input on the many topics facing our town. Godspeed, eternal rest, and lots of love to a great man.
