When Heidi Murkoff sent her book proposal for What To Expect When You’re Expecting, she was two hours away from going into labor with her daughter Emma.
She had no idea if anyone would buy it, but in that moment she said she felt like a mom on a mission. When I sat down to talk with her, Heidi put it so simply:
“I pretty much thought if a handful of parents slept better at night than Erik and I had that I would have accomplished what I set out to do.”
You know I like to talk about the importance of having a squad behind you that understands what you’re going through. Having people you can consult, ask questions about their experience and being able to relate it to your own experience is so valuable and can help keep you sane.
I also know that sometimes it can feel hard to find your people. You might feel like your immediate family and circle of friends don’t quite get what you’re going through, and it’s hard to talk to them about it.
I love the fact that the core of all of Heidi’s “What To Expect” books is helping people through fertility, pregnancy and beyond by giving them an anchor point that they can return to whenever they feel unsure or have a question.
If you can’t find your squad in the people around you, it’s ok. You can still find your squad by finding books, blogs and online communities that help you stay grounded and give you a place to go with your questions.
When we were diving further into her motivation for her books, Heidi said “What keeps me going, what motivates me and what inspires me is helping moms and dads through this experience and answering the questions they have that for me went unanswered.”
I can’t think of anything more caring and community-oriented than that! And that’s exactly what your support system is for. So, if you’re feeling a little isolated or alone on your journey, don’t despair.
There are people out there who you don’t even know, yet who care about you and what you’re experiencing, and they’re creating spaces for you to find answers and connection.

When Shannon Willardson came to me as a fertility patient, she was already a mother to three beautiful kids - two daughters and a son. But, she and her husband, Chase, still had a strong feeling that their family still had growing to do. As she said in one of her recent social media posts, “...we kept pursuing expanding our family because of the overwhelming feeling we had that there were more little spirits who were meant to join us.”
And oh my goodness, were they right! Through an amazing surrogate, Shannon and Chase welcomed home not one but TWO new family members: their twinnies, Ruby and Jane.
But if you think they just decided one morning to grow their family via surrogacy, and it worked out perfectly, think again. They didn’t come to surrogacy until after 9 egg retrievals and 3 failed transfers. It was a long road, but Shannon’s belief that she still had love to give to members of her family that she hadn’t met yet got her through it all.
And, the icing on the cake? She and her surrogate became great friends. Shannon’s kids call her Aunt Jess❤️
Shannon, it was such an honor helping you complete your family, and even more so in getting to guide you through the miracle of surrogacy. Your words mean the world to me! And your fertility story is such a testament to the power of belief.
When you know in your heart that there is something you’re meant to do, and you follow that pull, it doesn’t always happen exactly the way you thought it would. It might not happen right away, or look at all the way you imagined it. But if you can keep following that pull through every setback and piece of difficult news, you can find a way to make your dreams come true.
That’s exactly what I’m here to help you do.
It’s why I tell my patients “You’ll become a mother one way or another.” There are options available to you that you may not have even considered, but they might be what gets you to the “finish line.”
So, hold on, keep your belief strong, and trust that tug on your heartstrings - they’re leading you the right way. And if you need help along the way, schedule a consultation here, and we’ll find your path forward together: https://www.draimee.org/schedule-a-consultation

I am so excited to have Dr. Stephanie Fein joining me today on The Egg Whisperer Show podcast. We’re going to talk about a topic that can be quite sensitive. It’s about optimizing your fertility through weight loss. There’s no better person to talk about this today than Stephanie. She earned her medical degree from UC Irvine, completed her internal medicine residency at UCLA where she also received a master’s in public health.
She’s passionate about weight loss and motherhood and loves to help women optimize their fertility through weight loss. She’s sharing her philosophy and perspective on weight loss and fertility, which is to make it guilt-free, deprivation-free, and frustration-free. She is also sharing how weight, insulin and inflammation have an impact on your hormones when you are trying to conceive, and we talk about the connection between IVF success rates and weight loss.
I hope you’ll tune in for this insightful and science based discussion about weight loss and fertility.

At-home insemination offers an option to many who are looking to grow their family💛
For some families, it can be a more accessible and less invasive option to explore on the path to parenthood.
Here are a few of the things to know, as shared by Mauren Brown of Mosie Baby on the podcast (and you can swipe through the images to listen to her explain this too)
✨Some people choose to try at-home insemination before moving to more invasive fertility procedures
✨It can support many paths to parenthood, including LGBTQ+ families, solo parents by choice, and those navigating vaginismus
✨Timing matters: understanding your ovulation window can help improve your chances of conception
As Maureen shares:
“No matter how your baby is made: it’s made with love.”
Every fertility journey is different, and there’s no one right way to grow a family.🤍
