I hope this message finds you well on this lovely Saturday afternoon. I am writing about Juneteenth, which is today. I'm sure you've heard that it is officially a federal holiday as of this past Thursday afternoon. In my book, this is long overdue. To give a quick two-sentence history: "Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when a group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that they were free from the institution of slavery. But, woefully, this was almost two-and-a-half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation."

I was born in Houston, TX, and my family lived there until I was eight. We trekked to Galveston frequently, going to the beach to swim, and to a favorite restaurant for seafood dinner. From my early childhood in Texas, I have vague recollections about Juneteenth. But in my mostly white universe, it was not something I knew much about. My sense at that time was that it was a holiday for Black friends and neighbors we had, and not so much for my family. I didn't think that Juneteenth was unimportant, just that it was...separate. And I think we can all agree that "separateness" has its own way of defining what is important and what is not. https://conta.cc/35F58Sk
