We are excited to announce our 2027 15 Pink coaches — Co-Head Coaches Mike Buller and Izzy Ultsch and Assistant Coach Sam Felix!

With nearly 30 years of coaching experience, Mike’s coaching highlights include leading the 2017 13 Black team to a 3rd-place finish in the Open Division at Junior Nationals and to a 7th-place finish in 2023. In 2024, he helped the 13 Black team triple qualify in the Open Division, and he led the 15 Pink team to first-place finishes at both PNQ (Liberty) and Far Westerns (USA). He helped his current 14 Black team earn an Open Bid to Nationals this year as well. As a player, Mike was an MVP Outside Hitter at Pacific Union College Prep and competed at Southwestern University in the NAIA Cal Pac Conference, where his team captured the league title in 1993.

Izzy is in her fourth season coaching and has coached boys in the 16s age group and girls in the 12s, 15s and 17s age groups. She is also the head coach of Redwood High School’s varsity volleyball team. She played NCAA Division II volleyball at California State University Monterey Bay (Class of 2023), and she earned All–Tri-County League honors and was named team MVP as a senior at St. Mary’s College HS (in 2018) and second team all–league (in 2017). She played at AVC as a club player and returned last year as a coach.

Sam joined AVC in 2024 when he assisted that year’s 15 Pink team to first-place finishes at both PNQ (Liberty) and Far Westerns (USA). He has over a decade of coaching experience and played varsity volleyball at Watsonville High School. Sam’s teams have won multiple championships, including the 2023 Far Westerns American Division title. He also played on the U.S. Air Force volleyball team during his service.

We are excited to announce our 2026 16 Black coaches — Head Coach Jairo Sierra and Assistant Coaches Lizzie Ahern and Tyler Pease!

Jairo is joining AVC as the 2027 16 Black Head Coach, bringing over 20 years of coaching experience, during which he led championship-level club, high school, and collegiate teams. He most recently served as Master Instructor for all junior programs, as well as head coach, assistant and mentor at KIVA in Kentucky. He holds two KHSAA State Championships as a Varsity Assistant Coach and served as an assistant at Spaulding University in Louisville and St. Catharine College in Springfield, KY. Prior to taking his most-recent role at KIVA, Jairo was the head coach of Menlo-Atherton’s varsity team and worked across multiple age groups at the club level in the Bay Area.

Lizzie was a founding player on AVC’s first-ever 12s team and played at AVC through 18 Black before heading to Amherst College, where she had multiple NESCAC Player-of-the-Week awards and ranked third in the league in kills per set in her first year. She was also named All-Conference and to New England Women’s Volleyball Association’s All-Rookie Team. Lizzie began her coaching career in 2017 helping AVC 17 Black win first in the region and finish Top 20 in the Nation (Open). She is returning to coaching after a decade in North Carolina, where she was pursuing a graduate degree and obtaining her professional mental health counseling license.

Tyler has six years of coaching experience at AVC, working on the girls’ and boys’ sides across multiple age groups. He helped lead 14 Blue to a silver medal at 2025 Boys Junior Nationals. He helped his current 14 Black team earn an Open Bid and his current 15 Black team to a 2nd-place finish at NCVA Power League Regional Championships. Tyler played right side and outside hitter for Grand Canyon University’s club team. His team finished 3rd in the top division at Nationals, and he was named 2nd Team All-Tournament in his senior season.
