Roof Myths Busted: Fact vs. Fiction for National Roofing Week! đ
When it comes to keeping your home dry, thereâs a lot of old advice floating around. Today, weâre busting a few common roofing myths we hear all the time around Marin County, so you can protect your investment like a pro!
Myth #1: "A minor roof leak isn't a big deal if it stops raining."
FACT: Water follows the path of least resistance. Just because it stopped dripping into your living room doesnât mean it stopped rotting your plywood structure or growing mold in your attic. Catching it early saves thousands later!
Myth #2: "You can just layer new shingles right over your old ones."
FACT: While technically possible, itâs usually a bad idea. It traps heat (shortening your roof's lifespan), adds massive weight to your home, and prevents us from inspecting the underlying wood deck for hidden rot. And, it makes finding leaks more difficult as they travel between the layers
Myth #3: "If my gutters look empty from the driveway, they're clean."
FACT: Marin's redwood needles and oak leaves love to pack down tightly right at the downspout openings. Gutters can look empty from below while secretly holding inches of standing water that backs up under your roofline.
Myth #4: "All roofing materials perform the exact same way."
FACT: Between Marinâs damp coastal microclimates, blazing summer heat, and strict fire-safety zones, material choice matters immensely. Modern architectural shingles, metal, and synthetic tiles are engineered for completely different lifespans and weather loads.
The McLeran Takeaway:
Regular maintenance and a quick annual inspection are the cheapest ways to extend the life of your roof. Don't wait for to find out there was a problem!
