There’s so much discourse about AI art, and whether it’s the newest hottest “tool” or the destroyer of art. So many AI enthusiasts swear that it’s just like when Photoshop was introduced or Digital Video vs film; that it’s a tool that streamlines the product to show up on our feeds quicker. In all honesty, yeah, AI does that amazingly so. It IS a marvel to just be able to type out a prompt and something somewhat endurable is generated in mere minutes. It’s incredible to see a ruined shot get fixed without ever having to do a reshoot. It is incredible (albeit at the cost of such a detrimental environment impact, I’d say it’s not worth it but STILL it is a very fun thing). However, I think we’re missing the point of art… particularly film because that’s the medium I work in the most.

The point—for me—is to connect.

When making films, there’s a connection being built between the director, the crew, the actors, and eventually to the audience. You miss all that if it’s just generated. To me that’s what makes AI different from other tools like Photoshop or Digital video because you still get this aspect of connecting with other artists and are given the opportunity to put your soul into your work. I won’t deny that AI can certainly entertain, but entertainment isn’t always connection. To be fair, even human made movies don’t always achieve this connection because some people refuse to put their soul into something that’ll genuinely connect with their audience, and simply want to make a movie for profit or for the sake of saying they made a movie. This was never the reason I got into this. AI certainly doesn’t help in this regard of connecting to people, and it is the main reason I will simply just never be interested in it. I won’t shun you for using it, I understand why people like it… but it just isn’t for me.
