Yay, we made it to Friday! If you haven't yet, check out the many great displays our staff have curated for the month of June. There are books and DVDs related to Pride Month, Men's Health Month/Father's Day, our Unearth a Story summer theme, and for our America 250 Reading Challenge.

After all, there's no better way to spend a Friday evening than curled up with a good book from Wicomico Public Library!

For today's Meet the Cast is Bernadette, who will be portraying Alexa Irene Canady. Please join us on Saturday, June 27, for our third Black Living History Museum, which will be at the Sarbanes Library from 1 to 4 PM.

Please read below for more from Bernadette on why she chose this particular historical figure:

In my search for a female pioneer in the medical field, my research led me to Dr. Alexa Irene Canady. Her journey was not easy. She faced racism, isolation, and people who doubted her abilities simply because of who she was. At one point, an advisor even suggested she “might be better suited for a different career.”

Dr. Canady is a glowing example for every girl who has ever been told she wasn’t enough. Her life proves that talent, determination, and courage can overcome barriers.

After retirement Dr. Canady continued her work in the community to help women needing assistance. She is a living example we all need to follow.

There's always something cool going on at Centre Library. Next week, we'll be hosting another session of Monthly Memories Scrapbooking. Read on for more information on this great event!

Dug up some family memorabilia during spring cleaning? Save it for our introductory junk journaling workshop! In lieu of making a traditional scrapbook page, this month's "Monthly Memories Scrapbooking" will be a modified junk journaling session focused on 'unearthing' our family lore. We'll have a digital camera and mini photo printer on-site, so bring your family & friends for some new snaps! Participants will receive a medium-sized spiral-bound notebook to decorate and craft supplies will be provided.

New to junk journaling? Some ideas and suggestions on what to bring (optional, but recommended!):

Photos (there will be free printing access for program participants, so favorite those pics and Pinterest pins!)
Travel-related scraps (e.g. tickets from family/friend trips, brochures, maps)
Natural materials (e.g. that one cool leaf you found on a hike)
Fabric/clothing scraps (e.g. a button that fell off of grandma's sweater)
Sheet music; cards; magazine scraps; pages of your favorite childhood book (you can scan and print these at the event if you don't want to part with the originals)
Most importantly, bring your creativity and let's get sentimental! :)

If it's Wednesday, it's time for The Mary Minute with Mary Frances, your favorite and ours, too! This week, she sat down to chat with Barb Graham, who's leading sessions of Qi Gong at the Riley Library. The next session will be next Wednesday, June 17, from 12:30 to 1:30. We hope to see you there!
