Bailey's puppies 8 week Christmas photo shoot! 🎅🎄🎁

👉At 8-12 weeks old, your puppy’s brain literally cannot control the impulse to bite.

✅Their prefrontal cortex, the part responsible for impulse control isn’t fully developed yet.

➡️When they see movement, feel excitement, or get stimulated, their brain says “BITE” and they have ZERO ability to override it.

✅This is developmental, not behavioral. You can’t train it away like you teach sit or stay. Puppy biting at this age is like breathing, it has to happen.

👉And here’s what will blow your mind, the thing that triggers the MOST biting at 8-12 weeks? Petting. Yup! Fast petting. Patting. Hands from above. It overstimulates their nervous system and their only outlet is their mouth, especially if they are already wound up.

➡️So what do you do? Stop trying to “fix” the biting, you can’t. Start teaching them how to be CALM. When you reward calm, your puppy’s brain is focused on THAT behavior. They physically cannot bite AND sit calmly at the same time. These are incompatible behaviors.

✅Their brain learns: calm = reward. Biting = nothing.

👉Over repetitions, calm becomes their default because that’s what gets reinforced. They’re not thinking about biting when they’re thinking about how to earn the next reward for being calm. This is proven: Whatever behavior happens right before the reward is what gets repeated. Recognize overstimulation before biting starts.

✅Why redirection doesn’t work, because you can’t redirect when there’s no impulse control to redirect. You’re not teaching “don’t bite”, you’re teaching “here’s how to be calm when overwhelmed.”

✅The solution everyone misses is literally less stimulation = less biting. Biting decreases because their brain matures AND you taught them emotional regulation.

Did you ever wonder what it would look like to put 20 puppies in a really small pen just to see how cute it would look? Well now you know! ❤️❤️

For this video I dumped plastic ornaments into the middle of the puppies to watch their fear and recovery reaction. Its very interesting to see them initially pause, try to figure out what happened to scare them and then start exploring the source. The calmness is neat to watch when just moments before they were running all around crazily. This is part of the temperment testing we do to see how they react to things that scare them. Pausing and then exploring the source is the reaction we hope for as opposed to running away and hiding.
