A historic train ride is the perfect way to slip through fog and time…. *special request for Rockaway things…. Here is the time I took my mom to ride the train.

My mom and I boarded the train in Rockaway Beach, I purchased our tickets online and had selected the Historic River Wilson passenger car- it is covered but there is an open air car- really fun for kids…. We settled in on the side of the car closest to the water.

There is no rush on the train, it moves at a slowed down, peaceful pace. 10 miles per hour to be exact. The gentle clack of the rails was a lullaby, the windows pass by little lakes and waterways filled with seabirds and Lilly pads. I’ve never really taken the time to stare into these gorgeous green coastal lagoons, a heron in almost every one.

The train traveled 30 minutes South to Garibadli where we had just enough time to get out, stretch and look at the antique logging equipment collected here.

We board the train again and head back, I pop the window open and a fall leaf lands on my knee. There is an autumn color excursion presented by the same railway. Although I’m thankful for the perfect summer day I can’t help but dream
about zooming through the foliage turned orange, red, and yellow.

The train is a living museum, the railway came to This area in 1912. The trains main objective was to haul timber but it also brought passengers from Portland. Often times visitors would come to Rockaway Beach to stay the entire summer, setting up canvas tents before vacations homes were built.

I wonder what it would be like to take the train to my summer life on The Oregon Coast. Would I sew a dress just for the occasion? Would we ride a carriage up the beach at low tide?

It is all too easy to slip into a daydream as the tracks carry you through time…
