Glynn County History—Remembering the late author, Doris Buchanan Smith

Doris Buchanan Smith wrote children’s fiction books, the most famous of which was “A Taste of Blackberries,” published in 1973. Ms. Smith was born in Washington, D.C., on June 1, 1934. When Doris was nine, she, her parents, and her siblings moved from Washington to Atlanta, Georgia.
Doris’ sixth-grade teacher at the time, Miss Pruitt, realized that Doris had a flair for writing and telling stories. Fostering this love, Doris became a “closeted” writer. Doris would later dedicate “A Taste of Blackberries” to her.

While attending college in Douglas, Georgia, Buchanan Smith met her first husband, R. Carroll Smith. After college, the Smiths would move to Brunswick, Georgia, setting up housekeeping and raising four children of their own and dozens of foster children. The Smiths would later divorce in 1977. Doris began concentrating on her writing to support her family.

Doris would later marry Dr. Bill Curtis in 1990. They remained married until his death in 1997. Doris would follow him in August 2002.

Of the 17 books that Buchanan Smith wrote, only “A Taste of Blackberries” remains in print.
