West Point

Here is the man that we named Calwell Street after:

John Calwell arrived at Fort Frederica with his wife in February 1736 with the very first settlers. Calwell was a candlemaker from Temple -Barin In London, and quickly set up shop here at Fort Frederica.
Calwell and his wife Constance had three children here in Georgia, and the family made their home near the fort grounds in a nice 3 story house.

Calwell's candlemaking was a great success here in the new community, as he not only produced candles for the town but exported his candles as far away as Pennsylvania and New York! With his business thriving he was able to have his own personal brick bake oven, which was a novelty in the colonies.

Calwell thrived at Fort Frederica until his death sometime around 1753.
