The story of the United States cannot be told without Native Nations—it was shaped by them.

Native Nations are not a footnote in American history; they are the first governments of these lands. The story of the United States—of this land—has been shaped by our enduring presence and sovereignty. This Fourth of July, we honor and uplift the Native Nations whose leadership, diplomacy, and systems of governance helped lay the foundation for the United States. Long before the U.S. Constitution, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy demonstrated principles of governance that influenced America's democratic framework.

As we reflect on this country's history and future, we invite you to learn from, stand with, and invest in Native-led organizations. Supporting Native communities is more than an act of recognition—it's an investment in Indigenous leadership, self-determination, and a more just and sustainable future for us all.

June 25th marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Greasy Grass, or Victory Day as it is known by many Native people today. From June 25 to 26, 1876, a unified alliance of Lakota, Dakota, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho bands, led by leaders including Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, decisively defeated General George Custer and the U.S. Army's 7th Cavalry, protecting their families, homelands and the sacred Black Hills.

This day honors the strength, resilience, and leadership of Native Nations in defending our land, our tribal sovereignty, ways of life, and our people. This work continues today as Native nonprofits advocate for treaty rights, language and cultural preservation, equitable resources, and the ability to effectively determine for ourselves what thriving looks like with and for our communities.
