Republican North Carolina Rep. Pat Harrigan introduced a bill Thursday to allow active-duty and honorably discharged special operators across the U.S. to carry concealed weapons, the Daily Caller News Foundation first learned.
The Special Operations Forces Concealed Carry Act would extend federal concealed carry authority to “qualified special operators” — elite military personnel whose training and marksmanship standards match or exceed those of retired law enforcement officers. The legislation would also recognize their service “without undermining existing safeguards on firearm possession in sensitive places,” according to the bill’s text.

⚖️ Not All Gun Free Zones Are the Same
If you carry a firearm for personal protection, you’ve almost certainly encountered what people call a “gun free zone.” The phrase gets thrown around constantly, but many gun owners don’t realize there are two very different types, and the legal consequences of violating them can be very different.
Understanding the difference is important.
In the United States, gun free zones generally fall into two categories:
1️⃣ Government-Imposed Gun Free Zones
These are restrictions written directly into law by federal, state, or local governments. Violating them can lead to serious criminal penalties.
Common examples include:
• Federal buildings
• Courthouses
• Secure areas of airports
• Schools
• Certain government buildings
• Military installations
Even if someone disagrees with these laws, ignoring them can lead to criminal charges, fines, and potentially jail time.
2️⃣ Private Property Gun Free Zones
These are policies created by property owners.
You’ve likely seen these signs at places like:
• Retail stores
• Restaurants
• Shopping malls
• Movie theaters
• Sports venues
• Other private businesses
In many states, ignoring a private “No Guns” sign is not automatically a criminal offense. Instead, it typically becomes a trespassing issue if the owner or staff asks you to leave and you refuse.
However, the rules vary widely depending on the state. Some states give posted signs the force of law, while others do not.
🚨 Why This Matters
Gun free zones are controversial and widely debated. But regardless of where someone stands on the issue, responsible gun owners need to understand how these restrictions actually work.
Knowing the difference between government-imposed restrictions and private property policies helps you make informed decisions and avoid serious legal trouble.
Good decisions start with accurate information.

ATF just intentionally violated federal law and the Tiahrt amendments by leaking unredacted gun owner data to GOA in a desperate bid to sabotage our lawsuit against their secret NICS monitoring program.
This abuse of power by ATF defies congressional privacy protections for gun owners and sets a dangerous precedent for future anti-gun administrations to weaponize trace data leaks against the firearm industry.
This week on the Minute Man Moment, Ben discusses the First Amendment implications, media amicus briefs from outlets like The New York Times and Reuters, and why gun owners must hold the ATF accountable.
