There has been a lot of talk the last couple days about people receiving letters from the health department regarding a local tattoo facility that was engaging in unsafe & unsanitary practices. I just want to take a moment to discuss licensing & how serious that is.

Every year I disclose my inspection results. I believe in being transparent with my clients. If you go to a facility that tattoos or pierces & you do not see that artist open the needle in front of you, leave. If the artist does not use gloves while tattooing or piercing, leave. If you do not see a license visibly displayed, leave (you should check online before going to make sure they are in fact, licensed, which means they have been inspected by the health department).

Tattoo artists are required to be trained in bloodborne pathogen protocols. In order to pass their inspection they are required to update their training yearly. A properly trained artist will not engage in any of the unsafe practices I mentioned above. Hepatitis is more contagious than HIV & can live on surfaces not properly sanitized for up to a week. If you’re not adequately trained, you’re not knowledgeable in the ways to properly sanitize your equipment or work area.
